Mighty Lions kick off season with homecourt victories

Lions flag team celebrates after lopsided victory over Eastside Katz

Fort Worth, Texas—The recent NFL activities that locked out football union members has caused great anticipation around the country for the average American football fan. For community football teams like the Lake Como Lions, they never missed a beat. The coaches conducted their summer camps and held their practices despite the 100 degree temperatures.  This Saturday the Lions held their first game of the season and the victim unfortunately was the Eastside Katz.

The Lions fans were not disappointed. This years newest member, the flag team displayed skills beyond their age as they blanked the Eastside Katz. The same was true for the C-team as they kept Katz’s C-team from scoring. We sadly have to report that comoathletics.wordpress.com only covered the Flag-team and the C-team. Next home game we’ll cover the A & B teams.

Como Center adds soccer to sports menu

First year soccer players find a new excitement playing Futbol at Como Community Center

Fort Worth, Texas—A philosophy that works extremely well, and has been proven to be true over the years at the Lake Como Community Center,”‘Its all about the kids,” unfolds again in form of the international sport soccer. A community known throughout the state for its active participation in community athletics, Como’s community center is adding the sport of soccer to their sport menu.

First year soccer players were co-ed

The fun part was watching the intensity each player brought to the table. Very instinctive!

Some of this years players became fan-favs like Isaih.

“I’ve been meaning to do it for sometime and now is as good as any,” spoke sports recreational specialist Ozell Cook. When asked about  expectations Cook plan is to implement interest slowly featuring four teams in the age range of 4-5 year olds. “I want to take a group and start out like we do with any of our sports, teach them the fundamentals, then focus on other areas building on those same fundamentals,” stated Cook.

The soccer field was actually halfcourt of the Como gym, but the kids didn't care

Referee and Como rec specialist Ozell Cook prepares for kick-off.

The first season, though new to the sports curriculum, was also new for parents. Many were familiar with football, basketball, track and field etc…but some never even viewed a soccer match before.

Green team scores on an empty nett.

Coaches have to do more than coach sometimes

A coaches job is never done

Nothing like excited parents to cheer on lil Johnny and Suzy!

All four teams and their coaches of the initial 2011 Como Soccer season

All things considered, with the foresight of Cook and other Como Center recreational staff the kids in Lake Como will be well-rounded in their knowledge and skills of many sporting specialties that soon may include a golf team. Why?  That’s because, ” it’s all about the kids.”

Como Lions place two teams in Super Bowl

Lions C-Team seal deal to play in Super Bowl

Fort Worth, Texas—All season Como Lions community football fans attended and expected to see all four teams perform, from the beginner flag level to the A-team pre-teens, in respective succession on he same field. Well they should being that’s the format fans have come to expect-past seasons included. While the Lions fielded 3 teams (the Flag; the C-Team and the A-Teams) two performed at Monning Elementary, the flag team, (because of their record) was scheduled at Trinity Christian.

Lion fans were split up this Saturday and unfortunately the lone team who will missthis years Super bowl appearance will be the Flag Team. The Flag team ended regulation tied at 8-8 and lost 14-8 in overtime. Sadly the kick-off times overlapped and Damoonman’s could only provide photos for the Monning games.

The C-Team under coach by Lou Washington was prepared for todays game. Focused they showed poise fought through a heavily penalized game. Once they adjusted to the officiating and didn’t let the numerous off-side calls on their opponent they established a rhythm and tempo en route to a 28-8 victory.

Likewise the A-Team managed to keep a focus as they showed why the Como Lion football program has been the flagship for the league this season. Most of these young men, as in the past, have graduated the Como Lion program to impact athletic programs at public and private schools throughout the Ft.Worth area.  Final score:

The public is encouraged to come out and support the Lions two entries to this years Super Bowl on October September 23, 2010 at the old Maverick Stadium on the campus of UTA in Arlington, Texas. The C-Team plays Forrest Hill at 11:00pm; the A-Team plays the Fort Worth Horned Frogs at approximately 3:00pm.

Lion B-Team finish disappointing season with win

Como B-Team makes a good showing in season finale. Here runner makes cut for extra yardage

Ft.Worth, Texas—The 2010 football season for the Como Lion B-Team wasn’t quite what many of the sport pundits perdicted. Even though this years team was made up of first-time players, many who moved up from the C-team, a play off berth wasn’t out of the question.

Bright spot for the B-Team was their QB who also played defense

Lions turn focus to playoffs after thrashing Poly

C-Team cheerleaders have much to cheer about as their players are playoff bound

Ft. Worth, Texas— As the regular season winds down announcements of playoff positions have been good tho the Como Lions four teams. So far it looks like the flag, C, and A-teams are playoff bound. The A team braces for the playoffs with an undefeated record except for the league-wide tie placed on each teams record for the rained out game that couldn’t be made up.

Unfortunately for the B-team,whose record of wins and losses didn’t help their playoff chances, as they were eliminated from this years playoff perch.

Apologies for no photo’s of the Flag Team against Poly nor the A-Team. Be advised each team won on this day as they defeated the Parrots. Look for updates at http://comoathletics.wordpress.com to inform our readers on the times and dates of the Lions next opponent.

Como bats 3 out of 4 in football wins

Flag team sets the tone for other Lion victories on Saturday with a 38-0 win. Lions run off the field to cheering Como fans

Fort Worth,Texas —- The mighty Lions were home at Monning Middle School for their latest gridiron test against the Apaches from Arlington,Texas. Familar foes who’ve competed on the football field for some 13 yrs which means no team has the real homecourt advantage.

Fortunately Como was 3 out of 4 on this football contest as the Lions only loss came at the hands of it’s B-Team. All the other victories were one-sided:44-0;38-0, etc… Though the B-Team has only one one game this season they still can seem to put together 4 quarters of football.

Lions prevail despite of HEAT!!!

For a September it was an extremely hot day for football. Coach Lou keeps water and fluids flowing doing timeout.

Fort Worth, Texas— We must start out with an apology to the Flag Football team. Didn’t have enough staff to cover the first game- due to difficulties beyond our control. We can report that our back-up eyeballs informed that the Flag team fought to a 0-0 tie.

Hand offs to #25 was the driving force for the Lions C-Team victory

This was a familar view for the Falcons defense all day

It was getting quite warm when we arrived for the C-Team kick-off. The temperature continued to rise as the C-Team took a commanding 16-0 lead at halftime of their game. #25 for the Como Lions scored on two long runs despite the fact that he long gainer’s; 2-3 TDs called back.

The mighty Lion B-Team still struggles with turnovers and penalties. Understanding that’s part of the process of learning the game the Falcon B-team exhibited the same traits. Falcons scored toward the end of the 3rd quarter and failed the extra point attempt. The Lions mounted a fierce drive with a little over a minute left as time ran out before they could make one last attempt at a score.

B-Team loses a tough one 6-0.

The A-Team seems just putting polish and shine on their game. Their running game has proved to be a potent weapon led by their speedy running back T. Jackson. Though the A-Team backfield is loaded with talent they have an immensely talented offensive line that opens big holes for whoever gets the ball.

Lions attack!!

As mentioned earlier the heat played a factor in this game being called at halftime. T.Jackson took two hand-offs both for over 70 yards as well as an interception for about the same that gave Como a convincing 22-0 halftime lead. Cooler heads prevailed as both coaches put down their wolfing at each other and had a Kum-Ba-Ya moment awarding Como the victory with the Falcons agreeing to forefeit the remainder of the game due to excessive heat.

Como football teams display poise and character

Asst Coach Marquis Kennedy oversees warm-ups prior to kick-off

Fort Worth, Texas— The football community league has less teams than in the past. Possibly due to the economic downturn trickling through the streets of many urban cities-Como not being sparred. The football teams, in only their second game, are showing the kind of poise to win and the character that comes with defeat.

Captian’s for Como & Forrest Hill shake hands before game.

Forrest Hill running attack proved to be a challenge for the Lion defense most of the day.

This weekend Como football rounded out at 50% (that’s including all four teams). The Flag team and the B-team suffered loss while the remainder of teams displayed poise in overcoming their opponents.

A-Team Photo’s

A-Team cheerleaders have something to cheer about this year.

Early in the first quarter the Lions found themselves backed against the goal line. T.Jackson pops through a hole for a 96-yard TD.

T.Jackson seem to be pointing (striding) to goal line.

Como let their swarming, got-to-the-ball defense do the talking.

The game wasn’t a route but Como was in total control. Watching them line up and execute was worth watching.

For the football fans who haven’t been able to attend any games the next one is scheduled at Western Hills practice facility. Considered home for the mighty, mighty Lions.

All great teams have great lines

Fort Worth, Texas—With just another brilliant performance, the question now becomes not how, but how many will the Lion A-Team win by. Players ranging from age 11-13, seem tohave an edge on the other levels when it comes to focus and coachability. The Lions coaching staff has their players attention from start to finish and seem to be able to grasp advanced concepts preparing them for competition at the next level.
